Living Whole In A Broken World

Have you ever walked into a room and not known where to start cleaning? it may be the kitchen with dishes all over the counter, and the remnants of a sumptuous feast left at the sink or on the table. The mess may be so overwhelming you may not know where to begin. So also it goes with the brokeness of life. There may be life plans interrupted by illness, separations caused by war or an unexpected job change, lives decimated by divorce, healing from the death of someone we consider irreplaceable in our lives. All these circumstances contribute to breaks in our lives. it is how we deal with these breaks that depend on whether we come to live an abundant life or if we continue to drown in sorrow and despair.
Isaiah 61:1 says, ” The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives; and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;. Jesus went to the cross for all our brokeness, he was broken literally so we wouldn’t have to bear our brokeness alone. We, as Christians do not sorrow as the world sorrows; because we have one who has borne our sorrows for us. This is why the Christian has a hope that the world can not understand. Even in the midst of intense sorrow and brokeness we can have joy and peace. II Corinthians 7:10 says, “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” Because Jesus bore our sorrows, we can lay our sorrow at His feet and be healed and forgiven. When life breaks us to the point where it seems there is no hope; we have hope that we can be healed because Jesus is the Great Physician. After the death of my daughter, I felt at times that I would die of a broken heart. I didn’t want to think of a life without her; yet slowly, ever so slowly, God showed me that her purpose in this life had been fulfilled, as hard as that was for me to accept. I began to realize that I was still here for a purpose yet to be fullfilled.Jesus said he would take my brokeness and cause new life to spring from something that seemed hopeless.
Though I am still pondering how to recover and heal from brokeness and I know that I don’t have all the answers; I know that I can look to the one who was wounded, despised, rejected and broken for me. I can lay at His feet my brokeness, my despair, what seems to be hopeless and without purpose. Jesus told his disciples before he was to be delivered into the hands of the Gentiles and those who would ultimately crucify Him; He told His disciples, “In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (St. John 16:33)
I John 5:4 says, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” Our faith in Jesus Christ and His word is what will give us the power to overcome disappointments in those who have betrayed us, hurt us, divorced us or forsaken us. Our faith in Christ gives us the power to forgive, to love and to move forward. Our faith in Him and His word gives us the strength to move past our disappointments and not be destroyed by the brokeness that we face.
If you feel that your tears will never dry up and that the intense pain that you feel will never go away; know that someone went to the cross for all those tears, and that He was wounded for your sorrow and your brokeness, and that you can place those things at the foot of the cross that He died on.
