ATTRIBUTES OF GOD’S LOVE

Since love is abstract, it can only be measured by actions. St. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son…God demonstrated his love toward mankind by doing something; he gave the greatest thing that he could give-his only son. Jesus Christ was the sacrifice who took our place so that all of mankind would have the right to eternal life.

God’s greatest attribute is love. Love is what God is, and it is the single most important characteristic born-again believers should strive to emulate. One characteristic of God’s love is truthfulness. When Jesus stood before Pilate and said that,”everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.” Pilate asked,”What is truth?” Well, if Pilate had known the Lord, he would have known that truth was staring him right in the face. Jesus had said, ” I am the way, the truth, and the life.” There is no real love outside of truthfulness.

Secondly, God’s love is self-sacrificing. When Jesus spoke to his disciples and told them to love one another, he said,”Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Love causes you to think more of someone else than you think of yourself. This is what motivated our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in all that he did. The Lord came into the world not to be ministered to; but to minister.

God’s love is long-suffering. It is my sincere belief that one reason the Lord has not returned to this earth is because he does not want anyone to experience the agonizing judgment of an eternal hell. The word says it is not God’s desire that anyone should perish, but that all would come to repentance. It is our sin and our unwillingness to repent that separates us from a holy God. Jesus is waiting and waiting for mankind to repent (turn away from the sin of rejecting Him as Savior)

While human beings tend to hold grudges and want to get even; God’s love is forgiving. The Apostle Peter asked the Lord how many times should I forgive my brother who sins against me, til seven times? The Lord replied, “until seventy times seven.” God’s forgiveness is limitless; but it is also conditional. He is as forgiving toward us as we are to those who sin against us.If you don’t forgive those who hurt you, Jesus said he won’t forgive you, when you sin against Him.
