Jesus The Light Of The World

wpid-IMG_20130105_121317.jpgWhen I was a child growing up in Mississippi, my mother and I would often walk home from my grandmother’s on a dirt path that ran between the two houses.  Many times we walked home at night and there were no street lights to illuminate the path. Occasionally  my grandmother had a flashlight to use, but on those times when she had no flashlight we were at the mercy of nature; hoping there would be a bright moon. When  the moon wasn’t shining or it became hidden by night-time clouds, we were walking in the darkness. What I remember most about walking in the dark was the fear  I felt at not knowing where I was going, or what I would walk into,

Before I knew Jesus Christ I walked through life stumbling; not really knowing where I was going. I recall the terror of that darkness, and the longer I went in life without Jesus, the darker my life became. There were times I felt as though I were literally groping at the end of a rope, trying to hold on to what, I did not know.

Ephesians 5:8 says, “For at one time you were in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord, Walk as children of light.” If mankind could have found their  way out of darkness, there would have been no need for Jesus to come. St. John 1: 4,5 says  ” In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”  The first chapter of John goes on to say that Jesus came unto his own, but that his own did not receive him, but  as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.

As Christians we are on a journey; and as with any journey you need a road map or guide to arrive at your destination. The guide for the Christian is Jesus, this is why he is called the light. Light guides one through the darkness. Non-believers and skeptics may criticize and say, “what makes Jesus the only one qualified to be the guide through life, why not just listen to your conscience?” The problem with this is that mankind’s conscience is flawed, and has been since he rebelled against God in the beginning. If you don’t believe man’s conscience is flawed, turn on the evening news and listen to it for a few minutes.

St. John 8:12 states, Again Jesus spoke to them saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” It is important for everyone to have direction in their life, but especially for the believer in Jesus Christ. One reason it is so important for a Christian to live by God’s word is because it gives us direction. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.God’s word was written as a guide direct us on how to live in this life, and to prepare us for eternity in heaven.

Salvation is not only a gift from God; it is a miracle. Because the world lies in darkness, no one can come to Jesus Christ on their own. If being saved  from our sins could have been accomplished on our own, Jesus Christ would not have had to die. 2 Corinthians 4:6 lets us know this, “For God commanded the light to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” Since we can not come to Christ on our own, we certainly can’t remain with him on our own.

The best way we can stay on the path God has chosen for us is to study and meditate on his word. God’s word illuminates things for us that we don’t understand, and allows us to be a guide to those around us. “But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” (Proverbs 4:18)

Because we are Jesus’s disciples, and he is the light, we have that same light in us. You can not say that you know him,(Jesus Christ), and not attain his characteristics. Matthew 5:14-16 says,”You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill can not be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
